5.9 MILLION INJECTIONS, 6% COMPLICATIONS
Advanced Ocular Sciences is developing a computer controlled delivery system for ocular injections using Milestone Scientific technology.
It is estimated that approximately 4.1 million intravitreal eye injections were done in the United States in 2013. The number of injections is expected to grow to 5.9 million by 2016. 6% of injections result in serious complications.
As the population ages and diseases like macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy become much more common, many more people will require regular eye injections. Serious complications occur far too frequently.
A misplaced needle can result in severe bleeding and hemorrhaging, retinal tears and detachment, cataracts, increased intraocular pressure and damage to the optic nerve. These serious complications can be potentially eliminated by precise computer control.
HOW QUARK HELPED
Quark formed Milestone Ophthalmic to license Milestone Scientific technology for ophthalmic applications. The company’s name was subsequently changed to Advanced Ocular Sciences.
Quark listed Advanced Ocular Sciences on the Warsaw Stock Exchange through a reverse merger. The company was funded with seed capital and a government grant application is awaiting approval.
